The term "globalization" is often used in today's society to describe a broad range of interactions including the integration among societies, companies and governments. From what I have observed, this definition seems to form a vision of something that appears too far removed from the "here and now" that many individuals don't pay it any attention. For instance, I asked my roommates what they knew of globalization and the response I received was "oh, what's that?" and "I don't even know" quickly followed by a shift in the conversation. However, the closer we analyze globalization, the more we discover just how integrated it is with our daily lives!
Perhaps one of the most recognizable affects of globalization is the prevalence of imported materials such as food and clothing. A large percentage of the clothes I own were manufactured outside of the United States, and the food I eat is often grown somewhere across the world. Globalization and international trade has allowed for partnerships to be created; it can foster unity.
With the new age of technology, we see rapid growth of the internet and of its associated sites. Global issues that would have previously remained unknown to me are now available at the tip of my fingers through both web searches and social sites such as Facebook. As we have all seen and heard (perhaps even participated), the ALS ice bucket challenge has nudged its way into just about every corner of the social media world gaining support even outside of the United States.
Another aspect of globalization on the internet is Youtube. Viewers participate from all over the globe because it's a site that encourages easy accessibility to both upload and watch videos. Millions are exposed to images, film and music from sources located thousands of miles from their electronic screen.
In addition, my family has also recently been affected by the globalization of business. Due to the growth of my dad's company, he was transferred to manage a branch in Alaska. Although this is still within the United States, the expanse of a national business has altered the route of my family's life.
For me as a student, globalization has played a key role in influencing my choice of major. As I have become more aware of what is going on in countries outside of the United States, it has fueled my desire to help others. Public Health combats issues locally as well as globally, and works hand in hand with globalization to provide physical care and protection from disease to many communities including those with limited funds and resources.
Globalization is everywhere around us; it's influence is not abstract! With a closer look anyone can discover the role it plays in connecting and informing the world we live in today.
